As a child that started in a system that has expected my failure, to run for city council is active defiance.
Iola Kostrzewski

A Brief Introduction

Iola Kostrzewski

Iola Kostrzewski is announcing their run for Minnetonka City Council’s At-Large, 1A seat. Kostrzewski is a mother, HIV public health worker, former Foster child, and community activist. A resident of the Minnetonka community since 2018, Iola is an example of younger families who have made Minnetonka their home. Equitable and affordable housing in the city is an issue Kostrzewski has spoken on, as they believe the community should be open to all who wish to enjoy the benefits and beauty of Minnetonka.

Iola served on the Stonewall DFL board for 3 years in various positions including Co- Vice Chair, they are also the treasurer for the Somali Farmers Association. They have supported communities through Standing Rock supply runs, providing medical care during George Floyd unrest last summer, and continuing to show up for communities within Minnetonka and surrounding cities believing that “needs for equity and equality do not stop at our city limits.”

As a parent who had the same COVID struggles for their children as many other Minnetonka parents have had, and as a former Foster child, they have experienced how systems work and the intersectionality that needs to happen for these systems to work for all of Minnetonka’s residents. “As a child that started in a system that has expected my failure, to run for city council is active defiance. I am hoping to inspire other fosters, activate our youth, support young families, connect with seniors, and address the concerns of renters.”

My Vision for Our City

Explore my vision on

Housing

We are in need of more affordable and low-income housing with a focus on young families. Important to Minnetonka’s continued growth, these families would like to enjoy what our community has to offer but are priced out of the housing market.

Policing

How can we as a community ensure we are responding to the needs of the community while working hand in hand with established community organizations that have started the work, are addressing transparency, & are actively working towards change.

Environment

As climate change continues, we as a community need to address the immediate environmental concerns, and at the same time examine how our actions are affecting surrounding communities – pollution for one is pollution for all.

Education

Education policy should be written by students and teachers. Equity reform has to include everyone. Iola will stand with students, teachers and parents to make sure their voices are heard. City council needs an OPEN relationship with our school districts.

What People Say About Me

“Iola has a collaborative and practical approach to leadership, which is exactly what the City of Minnetonka needs at this time. As parents of young children, Iola and I have had many conversations about what our city structures need to be like in order for all families and community members to thrive in Minnetonka. Not only does Iola represent my priorities of inclusion, equity, and anti-racism – as a result of their years of organizing and leadership work, they know how to drive structural change to accomplish specific goals aligned with these values. Please join me in supporting Iola Kostrzewski for Minnetonka City Council At-Large Seat A.”
